‘Not showing it’ – Voetbal International
The Copa America for the United States is over after three games. Gregg Berhalter’s side were particularly disappointing in the group stage and could pick things up after the defeat against Uruguay.
Anticipation was high beforehand. Not only because America organized the Copa America, but Berhalter’s team has enough quality to be among the outsiders. Things turned out differently, because after three games it was all over for America. Uruguay needed to win on Monday night, but a goal from Matias Oliveira cost them the game.
According to Athletic America’s early elimination could have consequences for national coach Berhalter. “Our performance did not meet our expectations. We should have done better. We will evaluate in detail where we can improve ahead of the 2026 World Cup,” the US association said in a statement.
Berhalter, 50, has been the U.S. national coach for nearly six years, but may be in his final weeks with the association. ‘We know we are capable and we haven’t shown that this competition is that simple. We should have done better. We’ll evaluate what went wrong, but right now we have an empty feeling,” he said later. ‘Am I still the right person? Yes.’
Christian Pulisic was also disappointed afterwards. ‘We started well and then brought a lot of energy with us, but in the end there wasn’t enough quality. I feel we gave it our all but couldn’t find solutions for the marks.
