Mercedes is implementing automatic lane change in Europe

Not only that Mercedes in California already has approval for Level 3 autonomous driving ahead of Tesla, the German manufacturer is now expanding its arsenal of driver assistance functions in Europe. The star-studded brand Distronic activates the Automatic Lane Change (ALC) function with Active Distance Assist. This allows affected models to independently change trajectories at certain predefined positions.

Level 2 – Under conditions

The ALC function, offered on Mercedes models equipped with Distronic and MBUX navigation systems, allows the car to automatically change lanes within a speed range of 80 to 140 km/h. However, the system can be activated only under certain conditions. In addition to the combination of Distronic-MPUX and Speed ​​Fork, a speed limit is displayed and the car must be driven on a road registered in the integrated navigation system.

The route must have road markings that can be detected by the computer and sufficient clearance. A lane-changing maneuver is performed without the driver doing anything but keeping his or her hands on the wheel. So this is an autonomous driving function at level 2.

The introduction of Level 3 autonomous driving in Europe, such as already exists in some US states or on some major US interstate highways, will depend on legislation introduced by various EU countries.
