With videoFormer Ajax player Sergino Test and three other footballers have been suspended following the clash between Mexico and the United States in the semi-finals of the Nations League in the CONCACAF region. Four red cards and nine yellow cards were issued in the game, which the USA won 3-0. Both teams finished the game with nine players.
Test, along with Mexican Gerardo Arteaga, will be sidelined for two more matches after serving an automatic one-match suspension. Test’s compatriot Weston McKenney and Mexico’s Cesar Montes received additional three-game suspensions. Test and Arteaga had to leave the field in the final stages of the game after a huge fight. Montes was shown a red card for kicking an opponent, McKenney for getting into a fight.
The match was abandoned minutes before the end due to homophobic chants from Mexico supporters. Objects and drinks were thrown from the stands onto the field. Concacaf, the confederation of North and Central America and the Caribbean, has fined both countries. The amount has not been disclosed. Mexico and the United States have also warned of further sanctions if the competition gets out of hand again.
Gold cup
Test and McKenney are not on the U.S. squad for the Gold Cup. The United States has selected a team with few players active in Europe.
The Americans began their defense of the Gold Cup title with a tough draw against Jamaica. Substitute Brandon Vasquez made it 1-1 with two minutes to go in Chicago. Jamaica scored in the 13th minute through Damian Lowe.
Jamaica had a chance to double their lead in the 29th minute. But Leon Bailey failed to convert the penalty kick. In the USA and Jamaica group, Trinidad and Tobago and St. Kitts and Nevis are the other opponents. 1 and 2 numbers in the group qualify for the quarter finals.
