You have forgotten or lost your password. This is not very useful, because you can no longer access your account(s). And if you lose your passwords, you also risk that others will be able to access your data and personal files. This is what you should do if this happens to you.
Losing your password is one of the most annoying things that can happen to you. You can of course avoid this by keeping all of your passwords on a piece of paper or in a text document, but this is as inconvenient as it is not secure. Lost your password and looking for a permanent solution? Then you can arrange it with some simple tricks.
Change your password
First of all, it is of course important to change your password(s) if you have forgotten your old password. If you use the same password for multiple accounts, you should actually change the passwords for those accounts as well. You can do this in almost all cases via the login screen of the site. There is often a button or link at the bottom of the login screen with the text “Forgot your password?”.
This way you won’t get to know your old password, but you can instantly create a new one by clicking on the link that will be emailed to you. Enter a strong password right away, which is much more difficult to guess anyway than a cliched password like “password123”. Also use a unique password for each account. If you keep using the same password, potential hackers will only need to crack your password once to gain access to all your other accounts.

But what if you (also) forgot your mailbox password? Don’t panic, there’s probably no man at sea yet. Sometimes you can get your account back by entering your email address or phone number and answering some security questions. You can also often create a new password using a different email address or phone number that you previously set as a recovery option. Have these steps not worked yet? To prevent you from forgetting your password again in the future, you can use a password manager. You only need to remember one password. For hundreds of thousands of passwords you also use, you can then use unique and complex passwords. A password manager can automatically generate strong (and therefore more secure) passwords for you and remember them for you. Here you will find a number of good password managers in a row.
If you are still trying to handle your accounts and passwords in a more secure way, we also recommend you to use two step verification, Also called 2FA, to enable. Ideally, you should set this up for all accounts where possible. Fortunately, there is more and more. In addition to just entering the password, a second method of logging in is then required. This makes it more difficult for malicious parties to hack you.
Two-step verification can be done, for example, by an app like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator. New icons will always appear on your screen that you must enter within a certain amount of time. It is also possible to enter a code from a text message. You can even use a specific type of USB as a 2FA method, such as YubiKey from Yubico. The drawback of this is that you can of course lose that actual login key.
