Midfielder Clean Acosta opened the scoring for Los Angeles after half an hour. Hungary’s Daniel Gazdag equalized in the 59th minute. When Jesus Murillo gave Los Angeles the lead again in the 83rd minute, the title seemed imminent for this club. Jack Elliott answered almost immediately (2-2), after which extra time was necessary.
Los Angeles FC lost goalkeeper Maxime Crepo in the second half of overtime. The Canadian was shown a red card and was also seriously injured. With another man on, the Philadelphia Union again took the lead by way of Elliott (2-3). Substitute Bell headed in at 3-3 shortly before time, so a penalty shoot-out had to decide. Philadelphia Union failed to convert a single penalty.
Italian Giorgio Chiellini remained on the bench in Los Angeles.
