With a vibrant and growing population, Latin America and the Caribbean is a dynamic region with great potential. The region has many unique natural resources. Latin America is one of the world’s most biodiverse regions, and the Caribbean is often described as a ‘biodiversity hotspot’.
Although Latin America and the Caribbean account for only 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the region is increasingly facing the impacts of climate change. Think temperature and precipitation, extreme weather and resulting disasters, melting glaciers, droughts and flooding of rivers and coasts. Highly urbanized coastal areas and small island states are particularly vulnerable to sea level rise.
These challenges have profound implications for local communities, the economy and the environment. However, they are opportunities for the region in the form of the so-called “green transition”. Many countries are already adapting to this change and taking climate action by investing in renewable energy, decarbonizing their economies and building resilient infrastructure. There are also many opportunities for renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and geothermal heat. Nature-based solutions not only offer opportunities to reduce hazards, but also to adapt existing infrastructure and built-up areas.
