La Palma suffers the strongest earthquake since a volcanic eruption | science and planet
The Canary Island of La Palma was hit by the strongest earthquake since the volcanic eruption nearly six weeks ago. These were earthquakes measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale. These symptoms were felt early Saturday morning in La Palma, but also in parts of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro, state broadcaster RTVE reported.
No major damage was reported. Since the volcanic eruption, there are dozens of earthquakes in La Palma every day. Those earthquakes occur at a depth of more than 30 kilometers and are therefore not very dangerous, according to experts. Experts said the volcano on the Cumbre Vieja mountain range in the southern part of La Palma will remain active for some time.
This is not necessarily bad news for the economy of the small Spanish island of 85,000 people. Since then, the volcano has become an important tourist attraction, according to RTVE.
The volcano erupted on September 19 for the first time in 50 years. Since then, rains of lava and ash have wreaked havoc on homes, infrastructure and agriculture. More than 7,000 people had to leave their homes as a precaution. Nobody was seriously injured.
