How did your love for America really begin?
‘My publisher once told me that I should respond to it very seriously. After all, I am a political scientist. But the honest answer: Bossy and Adrian! In the 1990s they made a series in America. I was very impressed as a boy. I thought: How can a country be so impressive? Bass and Ed Van Toure created entertaining and educational television. Without knowing it, I got my first lesson in politics when they explained in Washington what a president basically does. Perhaps this makes me an American expert.’
Why drama college?
‘I often get questions from viewers on Today Inside. My podcast America in 15 Minutes also revolves around questions from listeners. I notice that everything that happens in America is very much alive here. I can introduce people to my interest in theater in an engaging way and answer their questions. And since Johan Derksen isn’t there, I can speak directly for a change!’
What exactly can people expect?
‘American politics covers many scenes. It is the greatest show on earth. It provides me with countless fun events, with some videos that not only enthrall the evening, but are also very entertaining.’
America is so divided right now, isn’t your story a bit depressing?
‘On the contrary! Of course I’m not hiding reality, but ultimately Americans decide who their president is. And, I still love America. This summer I will be traveling in important states in November. Get some inspiration, but simply enjoy this beautiful country. The show is not without reason: Long live America!’
How do you think people will go home after your show?
‘America can seem so big. After my drama lecture, you will understand a little better what is going on. This is how I explain how Trumpism evolved and how electoral votes work. Perhaps you are affected by my enthusiasm. So you go home happy! What you think about this is up to you. I honestly don’t want to. I’ll tell you what you need to know, and then you’ll have to form your own opinion.
