Israel is scheduled to begin four-hour breaks from fighting in northern Gaza on Thursday to allow people to escape hostilities. The White House describes it as a step in the right direction.
According to White House spokesman John Kirby, the daily cessation of fighting is the result of negotiations between the United States and Israel. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also discussed the topic, Kirby said.
During periods of lull in fighting, Palestinians in Gaza can move to safer areas. Relief supplies can also be delivered during those four hours.
According to Kirby, rest periods will always be announced by the Israelis three hours in advance. The temporary interruption of Israeli operations currently applies to northern Gaza. Kirby goes on to say that the United States wants these daily breaks to last as long as necessary.
