International organizations meet on Sunday to organize aid to Afghanistan. The Asian country was hit by an earthquake on Saturday, which killed at least two thousand people.
The Dutch Foreign Ministry says the United Nations and the Red Cross, among others, can provide immediate assistance where it is needed thanks to funds previously provided.
“My sympathies go out to all Afghans who have lost loved ones and to the large number of people who urgently need help,” outgoing Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins-Slote wrote on Channel X earlier this weekend.
The major earthquake killed more than two thousand people. There are also several thousand wounded. A Foreign Office spokesperson says international organizations already have the resources to provide support through “flexible assistance” from the Netherlands, among others.
In addition to medical assistance, tents are also needed for people who lost their homes due to the disaster. Relief organizations are also bringing food, water and blankets to the earthquake area.
