The explosion occurred in the port of the capital, Saint Helier, early yesterday morning, at around 04:00 local time. A three-storey building completely collapsed. The fire caused by the explosion has been extinguished. Through Sunday, it became clear only the extent of the disaster, with many fatalities.

The rescue operation has now turned into a rescue operation, as there is little hope of ever finding the missing victims. This will take some time. “We haven’t been here for days, we’ve been here for weeks,” Police Chief Robin Smith told reporters.

The cause of the explosion is still being investigated. Local residents had called the fire brigade on Friday evening to report the smell of gas. Partly for this reason, the Jersey Police Chief has already called for the investigation to be carried out independently. It cannot be ruled out that those involved could also be criminally prosecuted.

Just over 100,000 people live on the island of Jersey, which lies in the English Channel between France and England. It is a self-governing island under the British Crown.
