Favorite Iga Swiatek Starts Strong in the WTA Finals, Coco Gauff Falls | sports
Iga Swiatek has convincingly won her first match in the WTA Finals. The world number one was too strong for Daria Kasatkina of Russia on the indoor hard court in Fort Worth, Texas: 6-2 6-3.
Swiatek has already won eight WTA titles this year and is the favorite in the final tournament, where the season’s top eight tennis players can compete.
The 21-year-old Polish player won the Roland Garros and the 2022 US Open. Swiatek lost only one final in Ostrava. In the WTA Finals, she will also meet Coco Gauff and Caroline Garcia in her group, named after former American tennis player Tracy Austin. The American and the French will compete against each other in their first match of the group.
Swiatek and Kasatkina met four times before this year; The Poles always won with clear numbers. She did so in the semifinals for Roland Garros, among others. Kasatkina is in eighth place in the world ranking. The 25-year-old Russian has won two championships this year.
