Jimmy Carter made a brief public appearance Saturday in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. This is despite his advanced age and news earlier this year that he was receiving palliative care and being treated for skin cancer. The 98-year-old Carter, who grew peanuts himself, attended an annual peanut festival with his wife, Rosalynn Carter.

The former president has been suffering from serious health problems for several years. For example, melanomas were found in his liver and brain. In 2015, Carter appeared completely cancer-free for a while, but the disease later returned. In February, the Carter Center, which he founded, announced that the former president had completed his treatment.

Carter, a Democrat, is as of 2019 the longest-living former president in American history. He was president from 1977 to 1981, and after one unsuccessful term he was forced to leave the field in favor of Republican Ronald Reagan.
