He met by videoFeyenoord’s Santiago Jimenez and former Ajax player Edson Alvarez played heroics for Mexico on Tuesday night into Wednesday. The striker provided the assist, after which Alvarez scored in the eleventh minute of stoppage time (2-2 after two matches). Mexico eventually beat Honduras on penalties in the quarter-finals of the European Nations League.
Mexico had taken a bad turn in the first quarter-final match against Honduras. They lost 2-0 on Saturday, meaning at least two goals had to be scored in the return leg in Mexico City to force extra time. PSV’s Hirving Lozano was in the starting line-up, just like Alvarez. Shortly before the end of the first half, Luis Chavez gave his country the lead, but the second goal took a long time to arrive.
Only in the 101st minute did Mexico manage to tie the score in two games. Substitute Jimenez headed a long ball deflected into Alvarez’s foot and the West Ham United midfielder scored the second goal to make it 2-0, triggering extra time.
After the goal, Honduras turned red. Firstly, backup goalkeeper Enrique Vacos received a red card and defender Denil Maldonado was sent off the field. Sanctions were ultimately to be decided. Jimenez immediately hit the first pin, followed by three of his countrymen. Because Honduras missed two goals, Mexico qualified for the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Nations League.
The Mexicans have never won this tournament before. Two-time winners America are the next opponent. The other semi-final match will be held between Panama and Jamaica.
