China and the United States want to improve their trade relations. The Chinese government said in a statement that the two countries agreed in the first phone call between the two trade ministers since Joe Biden took office.
The Chinese said that China and the United States exchanged “frank and pragmatic views on related issues and common concerns.” The Americans declined to respond to a request for comment on the talks, but sounded less positive before that.
Last week, US Trade Representative Catherine Taye said trade relations between the two countries were “significantly unbalanced”. She said parts of the trade relationship between the two countries have been unhealthy and, in some ways, hurt the US economy over time. The Biden administration has yet to make major changes to former President Donald Trump’s policies, despite a promised review.
It was announced on Tuesday that the United States would intensify its approach to unfair trade practices, especially from China. The Biden administration said that a special committee is being formed for this purpose. In addition, access to critical products such as semiconductors and batteries for electric vehicles is under review.
