A Canadian court has ruled that relatives of victims of the downing of a Ukraine International Airlines passenger plane over Iran in early 2020 are owed C$107 million (more than €74 million).
Canada’s Ontario court ruled in May that it was an act of terrorism, paving the way for compensation.
Iran has previously said it was a mistake amid tensions but refused to take steps to provide compensation. Tehran believes that legal proceedings should take place in Iran.

The plane was released shortly after it left Tehran on January 8, 2020. Downed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, who later learned this due to radar problems and human error. All 176 people on board were killed, including 55 Canadians and 35 people living in Canada.
The relatives of the six victims who said that the missile attack came in retaliation for Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, who was recently liquidated by the United States, had requested 1.5 billion Canadian dollars in compensation from Iran.
Reservation of captivity seized
Canadian media reported that lawyers now want to confiscate Iranian assets in Canada and elsewhere. Canada, Ukraine, Sweden and the United Kingdom, countries whose residents have lost their lives, have threatened legal action if the Iranian government does not provide an acceptable response by January 5.
