Aviation tax in the Netherlands | Medal chances for skaters | general
in Now you can catch up We discuss Schiphol's controversial report with reporter Jeroen Krahn. We also look forward to the Sprint World Championships and the Overall World Championships in Enzell, and we conclude with a cheese crisis in France.
The gist of the Schiphol report was clear: imposing a higher tax on air passengers on long-haul flights would result in far greater CO2 savings than shrinking Schiphol Airport.
The Netherlands currently imposes a ticket tax of €29 per trip. This rate applies regardless of how long you spend on board. But in the future you can pay more for a trip to New Zealand than to France.
Germany and the UK are already introducing such a distance-based tax on air passengers. Is the Netherlands likely to follow this example? Climate reporter Jeroen Krahn explains.
To Inzell, Germany: The world sprint championships and overall world championships start there tonight. What can we expect from the Dutch? Reporter Dan De Ridder is on the scene and has the answer.
“It will not be a surprise if the Netherlands hold all four world titles at the end of the combined championship on Sunday afternoon. Kjeld Noyes, Femke Kok, Jutta Leerdam (sprint), Patrick Rust and Antoinette Rijpma de Jong (all-around). They should all be among the best Candidates.”
Of course we'll be paying attention to the Dutch in the coming days, but who else should we be paying attention to? “In recent days, it's been all about one man: Jordan Stolz. The nineteen-year-old American has proven that he is the best skater in the world right now,” says Dan.
“But is he also the best all-rounder? He will accept that challenge this weekend, which is why the men's all-around tournament promises to be amazing.”
