Berdarks: Why are the countries organizing the World Cup allowed to announce their participation in the World Cup?
“FIFA wants the World Cup to live and the stadiums to be full. To achieve this, it is wise to allow the host country to participate. Imagine that the Netherlands organize the World Cup, but the Orange do not participate … I suspect that the Dutch will then go to the stadium at a slower speed and watch the matches less on the TV, not to mention the arenas would be full…”
“By the way, the World Cup is usually organized by countries that are likely to qualify if they are not the host country. In four years, the World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico. These three countries also participated in Qatar.”
Leonie: Dear Rypke, what does a NU.nl sports reporter’s day in Qatar look like?
“Every day is different, but there is a certain structure to it. Early in the morning I always try to swim for half an hour in the pool at my hotel, and then I usually do a few things in front of the TV (I regularly give a short update Good morning, Holland) and radio (I can be heard almost daily on Qmusic and occasionally on Radio Veronica and Radio West).
“I also visit all of Orange’s press moments (which are almost every day) and write news articles about them. In addition, I strive to unpack a few times a week with a longer interview with one of Orange’s operators, background stories and explanations.”
“Of course I will be present at all Orange matches and report on them. After that I talk to the players in the mixed area. I have now visited eight matches from other countries.”
“I’m not just here on behalf of NU.nl. I work with photo-journalist Bas Schroachter and provide interpretation in his videos. In short: these are busy, but above all fun and challenging journalistic days.”
