WASHINGTON (AP/RTR) — NBA star Brittney Griner is writing a book about her time in a Russian prison. She was imprisoned for about ten months and was only released in December after a prisoner exchange. The publisher plans to publish her memoirs next spring.
Greiner says she wants to write a detailed and comprehensive account of everything she’s been through since her arrest in February 2022. “Readers will hear my story and understand why I am so grateful for the tremendous support from people around the world.” It’s about her “horrific experience of wrongful imprisonment and how difficult it was to navigate the Russian legal system in a language she didn’t speak,” says the publisher.
Greiner, 32, was arrested for carrying grams of cannabis oil at a Moscow airport. She is one of the best basketball players in the United States, which is why her arrest caused such a stir. Eventually it could be exchanged for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
Griner hasn’t played basketball since returning to the States, but if all goes well, she’ll be back at her home club, the Phoenix Mercury, in just a month.
