The US Air Force will deploy B-1 bombers on Saturday to military exercises with South Korea. As a result, tensions on the Korean peninsula continued to escalate.
According to the news agency Yonhap The deployment of the strategic bomber comes in response to a series of weapons tests conducted by North Korea over the past week. The B-1 bomber was last deployed to US-South Korean exercises in 2017.
North Korea is angry because South Korea has started military exercises with the United States. These air exercises have been going on since Monday. Pyongyang then decided to conduct a series of missile tests on its own in protest. Seoul and Washington again called the tests “continuous provocations” and extended the planned exercises until Saturday.
South Korea also persuaded the United States to increase the deployment of “strategic assets,” including aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, and other long-range bombers around the Korean peninsula.
The United States accused Russia and China on Friday of protecting North Korea from further interference by the United Nations Security Council. The missile tests prompted sanctions from the international community, while China and Russia are calling for sanctions relief, they say to persuade Pyongyang to enter negotiations.
