Samsung will add a feature to its SmartThings Find app next week, the company announced Tuesday a favour. This also allows unknown Galaxy SmartTags, and Bluetooth trackers with which you can find things, to be discovered.
Smart Tags, which have been available in the Netherlands since January, are stickers that can be hung on a keyring or a bag zipper, for example. If you lose these items, stickers can send a signal to a paired Samsung Galaxy phone via Bluetooth.
The SmartThings Find app uses augmented reality to identify the SmartTag. This way, the user can be directed in the right direction if they lose an object with a smart tag. SmartTags can also send an audio signal.
Unkown Tag Search, the function now offered by Samsung, also picks up SmartTags that are not belonging to the user, but which the user carries with them, for example in a jacket pocket or bag.
In theory, the tags could also be used to track people if they had a SmartTag registered with another phone. Samsung will take measures against this. The South Korean company wrote: “When you press the home button, Unknown Tag Search searches for unknown smart tags and then provides a list to make sure no one is secretly tracking your site.”
Also, Bixby digital assistant will soon be able to find SmartTags if the user gives them a name. If the user calls the sticker a “bag” and asks Bixby where the bag is, SmartTag beeps.
