Airport plagued by delays near Istanbul gets second runway | Economy
Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen Airport has a new runway. On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan performed the opening ceremony. The cost of building the new track is 970 million euros.
Sabiha Gokcen had reached its capacity limits for some time because the airport had only one runway. As a result, there are regular delays.
However, in 2022, nearly 31 million passengers used the airport which is located in the Asian part of the Turkish city. There will likely be nearly 35 million this year.
Erdogan said that with the construction of the second 3.5-kilometre runway, which will be used exclusively as a runway, Sabiha Gokcen can grow to 85 million passengers annually. The old runway will be converted into an airstrip.
Sabiha Gökçen was opened in 2001 and is the headquarters of Turkish budget airline Pegasus. Budget airlines such as AnadoluJet and Flydubai also use the airport. This was followed by the opening of the new terminal in 2009. Three years later, plans were made for a second function.
