Godaf Tsegay broke the 5,000m world record at the Diamond League final in Eugene, USA, on Sunday. Armand Duplantis broke his own world record in the pole vault.
In the 5,000 metres, Ethiopian runner Tsegaye finished nearly five seconds under the old record with a time of 14:00.21. Since June this year, he has been named Kenyan Faith Kipyegon (20.05.14).
26-year-old Tsegaye keeps Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet (14.05.92) close behind her. Compatriot Ejgayehu Taye (14.21.52) finished third with a decent distance.
Tsegay won the world title in the 5,000m last year, but only finished 13th at the world championships in Budapest. She won gold in the 10,000 meters in the Hungarian capital.
In the pole vault, 23-year-old Duplantis reached a height of 6.23 metres. In doing so, the Swede jumped one centimeter higher than he had during an indoor competition in Clermont-Ferrand, France, in February this year.
This is Duplantis’ seventh world record of his career and first this year outdoors. The world champion had previously tried four times this year with a distance of 6.23 metres, but to no avail.
