gamesIn September 2013, “Grand Theft Auto V” was the crime series you had to play. An immediate brutal blow, but that was just the beginning of the story. Today, 10 years later, the online section attracts a number of players that even the new top players would not dare to dream of. GTA V is easily the most successful pop culture phenomenon of this millennium, and perhaps ever… with one potential downside.
look. GTA V has been fully polished for the latest consoles
The most successful films of all time? “Avatar” and “Titanic” are worth more than $3 billion. Best-selling music albums? “Thriller” by Michael Jackson and “Back in Black” by AC/DC, with sales of $70 and $50 million. The entire Beatles business? 600 million dollars. Impressive numbers. Perfect material for pop culture quiz questions too.
6 billion and no one is offering more
Oddly enough, the answer to this quiz question is never “Grand Theft Auto V.” Not mainstream enough? Are video games still too niche? 11.2 million copies of GTA V were sold in the first 24 hours. Re-releases, bundles, and remakes for new generations of consoles and players have pushed the counter past 185 million games sold. It is valued at $6 billion, making it one of the most successful entertainment titles of all time. So dear quiz makers, how mainstream do you want it to be?
Another achievement: in the top 5 weekly best-selling games in Belgium in 2022 and 2023, “Grand Theft Auto V” is often present. However, as powerful as GTA V’s solo gangster saga is and seemingly dated, GTA Online’s influence cannot be understated. This part of the game is set in the same fictional world as the West Coast games, but separate from the single player. It basically allows players to do social and anti-social criminal things with and against each other.

Every advantage has a disadvantage
Developer and publisher Rockstar feeds the enviable number of players in this online section with frequent updates and additions. This ranges from small and large events, new vehicles and thousands of cosmetic items, to full game modes and ambitious long-standing solo and co-op challenges. When the latest major expansion was released, we rightly wrote: “To the outside world, GTA may be old news, but to the GTA Online player it is a world that continues to grow and surprise.”
So this 10th anniversary is not the anniversary of a legendary album. It cannot be compared to the success of cinema, which has relied mainly on live broadcasts from passers-by for the past nine years. Maybe we should move more towards one Lifetime Achievement Award He thinks. I absolutely love this game and the online part too. But with some ill will, we also see a dark side to this continued success: it’s not really putting pressure on Rockstar to rush through the now-announced successor GTA VI.
The “Call of Duty” approach?
With more hope than science, self-proclaimed experts discovered the final chapter of GTA V in “The Last Dose”, and the official 10th anniversary on September 17 seemed to them to be the perfect moment to officially introduce Chapter 6. As of the time of writing, this has not yet happened. We’re not holding our breath. Following GTA Online’s anniversary on October 1, new goodies have already been promised.
On the one hand, it would be crazy for Rockstar to dismantle GTA V’s steadily flowing money tap with GTA VI. On the other hand, GTA V’s single player regeneration ability is already on its last legs. It’s time for a new single-player epic. This can be done completely parallel to the paths of GTA Online. Just as a new Call of Duty game is released every year, as well as the steadily advancing online division called Warzone. Only in “Grand Theft Auto” happens every ten years…or whenever the next year comes around to attempt the impossible: surpass the phenomenon of “Grand Theft Auto V”.
