Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki held off American favorite Coco Gauff in the fourth round of the US Open. But after three sets, her impressive return to the Grand Slam tournament in New York came to an end. Gauff won the match 6-3 3-6 6-1.
Wozniacki made her Grand Slam debut 3.5 years ago. The 33-year-old Danish player bid farewell to the Australian Open in 2020 and has two children. This summer, the former world number one decided to make a comeback. In New York, she beat, among others, Czech 11th seed Petra Kvitova and advanced to the fourth round.
After losing the first set to 19-year-old Gauff, she won the second set well. But then the Americans took over. Goff spoke fondly of Wozniacki afterwards. Gough said, “Caroline never seemed to go away. She is such a huge inspiration. As a youngster I was in awe of her. It was an honor to play against her.”
In the quarter-finals, she will play against the winner of the match between defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko.
