Limburgers who are seriously overweight and some other groups have been vaccinated against Corona since Saturday. This is also the case in Beringe’s general practice.
People with a body mass index (BMI) above 40, people aged 63-64 and people with Down syndrome (over 18 years old) were the first to be vaccinated in GP today
The Verstraten General Clinic in Beringe received more than eighty people for the injection of the AstraZeneca vaccine. This vaccine is designated by the government for people up to the age of 64. In some countries, people over the age of 65 are vaccinated with the vaccine, but not in the Netherlands.
Overweight on ICs
Figures from the Heart Foundation show that about 78 percent of Corona patients in intensive care units are overweight, with a BMI of 25 or more. 34 percent of Corona patients in intensive care units are seriously overweight (BMI of 30 or more). This share is above average: about 15 percent of adult Dutch people are seriously overweight.
Sign up if you belong to the target group
According to GP Jolanda Verstraten, not all people who are overweight use a computer. People who are seriously overweight often have other complaints due to their weight. “Often they have heart complaints or diabetes. Younger people with morbid obesity (BMI over 40) are often unknown to the general practitioner. Then it is important to think as a general practitioner: which people I know belong to the target group Also … a call to youth to inform their GP if you belong to the target group. Because you are eligible for the vaccine. “
The first vaccination
Monique Bos from Koningslust was the first female from Limburg with a BMI over 40 to be vaccinated today. “I am in the danger zone, so I am happy that I got the vaccine. It gives me more safety. And of course my environment. The burden is on me.”
She suffered the last period as anxious. “You see a lot of pictures around you in the media. I was very careful recently.”
The second shot
Monique and the others who got the shot today aren’t done yet. They must return for a second injection within eleven weeks. According to GP Verstraten, this is essential to obtain maximum protection. “If we give the second injection after eleven weeks, the degree of protection is the highest.”
