This week, it turned out that the monkeypox virus was advancing in Europe. More than 40 confirmed and suspected cases of the virus were monitored in Spain and Portugal, while the number of infections in Britain rose to nine. Some infections are caused by sexual contact, especially between men.
The virus also appeared in the US state of Massachusetts, the first case in the United States this year. It is about a man who recently traveled to Canada. Canadians are investigating at least 13 suspected cases. The World Health Organization calls on affected countries to carefully verify contacts of infected people.
Monkeypox usually occurs in central and western Africa only. According to officials in Africa, outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Cameroon and the Central African Republic have been kept “under the radar” during the coronavirus pandemic.
Symptoms in humans include a rash that often begins on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body, fever, and muscle aches. Most people recover from the disease within weeks, which can sometimes be fatal. The virus was first discovered in monkeys in 1958.
