Population screening in the Netherlands will begin on 13 June 2024 with a new research round of the VIERT Population Breast Cancer Survey. Women ages 50 to 75 years who live in the 6001-6003, 6004, 6005, 6006, and 6039 zip code areas will receive an invitation to participate in the study.
The research is being conducted at a research center in the parking lot of the Boshoven Sports Park, on the Vrakkerveld in Weert.
A common form of cancer
Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the Netherlands. One in seven women in the Netherlands develops breast cancer. By detecting the disease at an early stage, the chance of recovery increases significantly. This is why the population survey was created. As a result of population screening, between 850 and 1,075 fewer women die from breast cancer each year.
Population survey
The population survey is intended for people aged 50 to 75 years. They receive a written invitation to the breast cancer screening program once every two years. The examination consists of taking x-rays of the breasts. The survey is voluntary and free.
Equal width
Population screening should be equal for all women in the Netherlands. This is not the case at the moment. In one area, women have to wait longer for screening than in another. To reduce differences, the research may be conducted in a different location. The client may also have to travel longer to the research center.
