Windows 11 22H2: Microsoft tests enabled Spotlight slideshow on desktop by default

With Insider Preview Build 22598, Microsoft is testing a new feature for Windows 11. The developer is slowly rolling out Windows Spotlight to beta testers, replacing the default desktop background in Windows 11 with images chosen by the Bing search engine.

Windows Spotlight on the Windows 10 lock screen.

Since the advent of Windows 10, Spotlight has been used to automatically display images of landscapes or unique locations on the lock screen, including background information about the respective image. With version 22598, Microsoft wants to bring this functionality to the Windows 11 desktop as well. While this is enabled by default, users will still be able to choose their wallpaper. There are also experiments with 4K wallpapers, although again they are limited.

The menu allows users to like, dislike, or skip the current wallpaper.

This change is likely to be implemented in Windows 11 22H2, which is expected this fall.
