Where should the new Paleis voor Volksvlijt be located? “Also a nice place for a slavery museum”
Wim T. Schippers is no longer alone politically in his decades-old struggle to rebuild the Paleis voor Volksvlijt. The exhibition building burned down in 1929. He now also has the CDA and PvdA on his side, but they have a different place in mind than Frederiksplein.
“What could be better than to put the most beautiful building in Amsterdam here?” This is what CDA council member Diederik Boomsma says on a vacant lot next to Kraainnest metro station. Boomsma put forward a proposal to restore Paleis voor Volksvlijt to its former glory in Zuidoost.
Next OBA
He thinks he kills two birds with one stone. The municipal executive has allocated €36 million for the yet-to-be-built OBA Next building in the southeast and an additional €50 million for other cultural facilities in the area, “possibly jointly with OBA Next”.
Boomsma and PvdA now want the council to investigate whether a new Paleis voor Volksvlijt cannot be built where the OBA will then reside. Wim T. Schippers has been struggling for almost a quarter of a century to reconstruct the ideas of Samuel Sarfati, but on Frederiksplein: “because he was always here”.
In the video, Schippers and Boomsma try to convince each other that their place is the best, but activist Schippers is getting a little impatient: “She’s getting a little old and I want to see her so bad.”
