American DiDonato’s Joyce greeted, “Welcome back!” , her humble audience with great enthusiasm. After a close of nearly eight months (except for some concerts by Tested Visitors), 250 spectators were the first to enter the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on Friday. Later that evening, she repeated her playing for the same number of people.
Distinguished attendees were shown the versatile Di Donato, accompanied by pianist Craig Terry on his debut at Concertgebouw. In the first incoherent program they spoke to each other with casual charm and good humor. She thought about the suffering of the epidemic, but avoided the bad feelings.
Didonato’s sound has gotten warmer over the years. You might find the wobbly vibrations of her high notes and the tendency to turn an ‘o’ into her ‘oo’, but her quirks are the singer’s true privilege. In the Haydn Cantata Ariana Naxos Terry hadn’t found his feet yet, but the deserted Princess Didonato was there at once: great but human in her grief, her panic, and her anger.
After the tragic opera, the sparkling baroque singer appeared, followed by the dreamy jazz singer in isolation by Duke Ellington. Didonato waved the appearance of her usual parting, over the rainbow, but not before giving Terry, who is now fully active, the chance to improvise in a big way i love piano by Irving Berlin.
The biggest surprise was Mahler, the composer who once thought: “Not for me.” with humbleness I’m lost in the world Time stopped. We’d love to hear a lot more about it, translator Dionato Mahler.
