Venus Williams was also immediately eliminated for her third tournament of the year. The 42-year-old American, the former world number one and seven-time Grand Slam winner, had to lose in the first round of the Cincinnati Open to Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, 5-7 1-6.
The older Williams sister returned to Washington earlier this month after not playing on the WTA Tour for a year. The American lost in three sets of playoffs and then also stopped out in the first round at the Toronto Championships.
Williams can now prepare for her 23rd US Open. The organization of the Grand Slam in New York has given the 42-year-old American tennis star a wild card for the event that begins August 29. Williams won the US Open in 2000 and 2001. Earlier this month she returned to Washington after not playing on the WTA Tour for a year due to injuries.
American Sofia Kenin also received a wildcard. The 23-year-old tennis star, who won the Australian Open in 2020, is on his way back from injury, just like Williams. She was out for four months with an ankle injury.
