In an unusual move, the US military’s high command announced in a Twitter post that the Navy’s Ohio-class nuclear submarine had arrived in the Middle East.

The submarine can launch nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles, but now it carries not only cruise missiles with conventional warheads, but many of them: 154 Tomahawk missiles, each with a warhead of almost 500 kilograms. US bases and forces in the Middle East have come under several attacks since the Israeli crisis erupted, with the US Secretary of State recently warning the region’s powers, particularly Iran, to stay out of the conflict. This warning may be confirmed by a public announcement of the submarine’s arrival, otherwise usually operated in secret.
