Local media reported that Cuadras, 78, was hospitalized. Public Broadcasting Corporation RTVE Reports stated that the Spanish police are treating the incident as a targeted attack.
Cuadras recently strongly criticized plans by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s ruling Socialist Party (PSOE) to continue governing. According to Spanish media, the party concluded a preliminary agreement with Catalan separatists belonging to the “Juns per Catalunya” party.
Cuadras recently showed that he was very critical of Sanchez’s move
In the parliamentary elections that took place last summer, the opposition emerged as the strongest. However, he does not have enough seats to form a coalition government. Sanchez’s leftist coalition cannot obtain enough seats for a majority government in the Spanish Chamber of Deputies.
Therefore, Sánchez turns to small separatist parties in Catalonia and the Basque Country to continue ruling. There are large protests in Spain against Sanchez’s initiative. Support for Junts per Catalunya is particularly sensitive. This party was the driving force behind an attempt to unilaterally separate Catalonia from Spain in 2017. The anger of Spanish protesters is mainly focused on that party’s demand for amnesty for convicted separatists.
The Socialist Workers’ Party wants the agreement to be presented and sealed in Brussels on Thursday. After that, Sánchez will have the seven MPs in the Spanish Parliament behind him, and he will only have to enlist the support of the Basque National Party (PNV). But according to Spanish media, that won’t be a big problem for Sanchez.
Cuadras recently showed that he was very critical of Sanchez’s move. He described the SWP’s arrangement to receive support in exchange for the amnesty plan as a “shameful agreement”.
