Greek tennis star Maria Skari was awarded the eighth and final card of the WTA Finals.
She secured a year-end championship ticket by defeating Russian Veronika Kudermitova in the quarter-finals of the tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico. Fourth-seeded Scary won in three sets: 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
She joins Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Caroline Garcia, Arina Sabalenka and Daria Kasatkina in the WTA Finals field, which begins October 31 in Fort Worth, USA. They compete for the legacy of Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, who was the strongest in 2021. At stake is the Billie Jean King Trophy.
Demi Shores
In doubles, Demi Shores qualified for the WTA Finals for the fourth time. The 29-year-old doubles specialist will compete in the year-end tournament alongside American Desirae Krawczyk.
Schuurs has competed in the WTA Finals with a different doubles partner in recent years: in 2018 with Belgium’s Elise Mertens, in 2019 with Germany’s Anna-Lena Grönefeld, and last year with American Nicole Melichar. In 2019 and 2021, it made it to the round of four.
Schwarz, ranked 12th in the world in doubles, won the WTA title this year. In April, she won the Stuttgart Championship on clay.
