It’s still amazing how, throughout history, we’ve wanted to put the fate of our future, the fate of our planet, the education of our children, our “freedom,” and so much more in the hands of just one individual. Many who seem to think it is okay if there is a heavy hand in Turkey. Women’s rights will come under more pressure, and previous legislation will be repealed so that divorce will become less easy for women if they are not happy and can no longer make their own free choices. At that time, people are still somewhat steadfast, they cannot and should not be themselves and live more or less in fear if they do not live according to one individual’s vision. I find it unbelievable that so many people (also here in the Netherlands) would encourage such developments in Turkey. I find it shocking that this is the future of that country. Türkiye will get what it wants so badly, back off!

Turnout in the second round of the Turkish presidential elections is late. Support Erdogan at home because they think the race is over? Or that his opponents stay home because they no longer believe in him, that in and of itself doesn’t mean much to me. I am still curious. It is up to the Turks to decide who will lead the country in the coming years. I would like the Turks in Türkiye to decide that; I am of the opinion that Turks in the Netherlands and elsewhere in the world should not be allowed to participate in the decision-making of this matter, but that is also up to the Turks and not me (I also think this is the case for the Turks of the Netherlands; there are no voting rights for expats and no voting rights Voting for people of another nationality)
