Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki may try to form a new government. This seems to be an impossible task.
Polish President Andrzej Duda appointed Morawiecki and his nationalist Law and Justice Party to form the government. Observers believe that this is impossible, because none of the other parties wants to form a coalition with the Law and Justice Party.
The Law and Justice Party, in power since 2015, remained the largest party in last month’s elections, but was unable to achieve a majority. The party must therefore look for a coalition, but all other parties have said they rule out working with PiS.
The Civic coalition, which includes former Polish Prime Minister and opposition leader Donald Tusk, has already indicated that it wants to form a new government with two other pro-European parties. They now enjoy a majority in Parliament. But because PiS has become the largest party, it can make a first attempt. PiS ally Duda announced this before the polls.
In recent years, PiS has often been an obstacle in the European context. According to critics in Brussels, the party has contributed to the erosion of justice in Poland.
