De Graafschap can still make up for a historically poor season with Ajax reaching the quarter-finals of the European Cup. Definitely financially.

The duel with the Amsterdam team had already earned him nearly €100,000 before the ball was even kicked. €80,000 for reaching the quarter-finals and €17,500 for being broadcast live on ESPN.

Half of the receipts are added to that, because opponent Ajax gets the other half. De Vijverberg Stadium in Doetinchem will undoubtedly be sold out with 12,600 spectators.

The previous two times De Graafschap, the current number 14 in the top flight, had played against Ajax, there was a lot at stake. In 2016, Ajax missed out on the national title on the last day of the competition in the Eredivisie due to a 1-1 draw in Doetinchem. In May 2019, Ajax became champions in De Vijverberg with a 1-4 win.

The quarter-final matches between De Graafschap and Ajax will take place on Tuesday 28 February, Wednesday 1 or Thursday 2 March. For De Graafschap, Ajax is the first serious opponent in the Cup. For this, the big farmers wiped out the Rijnsburgse Boys, Quick Den Haag and De Treffers buffs.
