The US Open tennis tournament will not exclude Russian and Belarusian tennis players from participating, despite the invasion of Ukraine. Wimbledon decided to reject players from those countries.

The US Tennis Association did not want to exclude players because they did not want to hold individual athletes responsible for the actions and decisions of their government. He indicated that tennis players from Russia and Belarus will play under a neutral flag, as in Roland Garros.

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, Russian athletes in multiple sports have been banned from participating. For example, the Russian football team is no longer able to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar. Belarus is partially responsible for its support of Russia during the invasion.

The British Tennis Association announced at the end of April that Russians and Belarusians are not welcome at Wimbledon, the herbal tournament in London that begins at the end of this month. The British have come under a lot of criticism for this, including from the ATP and WTA. The men’s and women’s tennis organizations have decided that no points can be earned in the world rankings this year at Wimbledon.

It also means that world number one Daniil Medvedev will not participate on British turf. The Russian won the previous edition of the US Open, and can defend his title there from August 29
