Strategy: Amazon relies on its Logistics Innovation Lab - Digital, Trends, Science, and Research | News

Online giant Amazon introduced an innovation lab for logistics applications in Vercelli, Northern Italy. As the e-commerce provider announced in a press release on May 20, the lab is primarily focused on technologies that will relieve material pressure on employees in logistics centers.

New assistive technologies include:

  • Material sorting systems: The fully automated individual item sorting system relaxes muscles as employees no longer have to search for items in the boxes.
  • Pallet racking: The large fully detached robotic arm eliminates the need for forklifts to lift pallets and automatically move containers from one place to another.
  • the device: A machine that raises containers and places them automatically on conveyor belts.
  • Automated guided cars and vehicles: Support robots – similar to transport robots – that automatically move around the site and move things to people. They have to reduce unnecessary steps and employees do not have to push and pull trolleys and containers. According to Amazon, these robots have sensors and follow pre-programmed routes to avoid colliding with people or machines.
  • RobotRobotic arms relieve employees from repetitive tasks such as lifting, stacking and rotating, so they can focus on more diverse tasks that robots cannot do.

According to Amazon, the auxiliary vehicles are already in use in Italy and will also be rolled out in Poland and the United Kingdom; Winches will be used in Poland and Great Britain in the future; Sorting systems for commodities and pallet robots are used in Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland and Great Britain; Sorting robots are used in Italy, Spain and Germany. Sorting robots will be introduced in Poland, France and the United Kingdom later this year.

Training on new applications

With new technologies also being introduced in other countries and locations, Amazon says it will provide training to all employees if these new innovations need to be implemented.

“We work closely with health and safety professionals and scientists, conducting thousands of safety inspections in our buildings every day and making hundreds of changes based on employee feedback. Once the new technology is introduced and staff are trained, constant feedback helps us improve and improve. Take the lead when It’s about developing the right technology for their field, “explains Stefano La Rovere, Head of Advanced Technology at Amazon Europe, who leads laboratory scientists and engineers.
