Luten battles fatigue in the run-up to the British Open
10.40 am: Just Lutton will start his eighth British Open on Thursday in good spirits. A brief test ride at the Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich went as planned. He played eleven holes on the “Extremely Hard Track” on the English East Coast and had no physical problems.
“My swing felt good and fortunately my back didn’t hurt,” Luten said. “I noticed my body is tired, I feel all kinds of little aches. These aches and pains are part of the major sport, I used to, but now it’s more than usual.”
Luiten urgently returned from Tenerife in the first weekend of May due to severe abdominal pain, where he participated in a tournament. No surgery was necessary after his second diagnosis in the Netherlands and more than three weeks later he was able to return on the European tour. With varying degrees of success, the 35-year-old Bleiswijker has played a number of tournaments towards The Open in England.
Luiten: “When I started having problems with my intestines in Tenerife and had to go back to Holland, I lay for two weeks, I couldn’t and was not allowed to do anything. When I became pain-free again, I started training hard to be fit fast again. Looking back, I may have done a lot too soon and my body is now reacting to it. But during my training run here at Sandwich I had absolutely no problems and was able to swing freely and I’m really looking forward to playing a major role again this week” .
Luiten made his major debut ten years ago and that was also the British Open in a sandwich. He finished 63rd at the time. His best result in seven entries was No. 32 in 2019. “The weather forecast for the next few days looks good with a lot of sunshine, so the track is going to get more difficult. If there’s a little wind, the scores won’t drop.”
