“The United States looks forward to consulting with Russia,” a spokesman for the country’s National Security Council said. “During the talks, Russia can bring its concerns to the table, and we will.”
Consultation with Ukraine
The spokesman stressed that no decisions on Ukraine would be taken without consulting with the Ukrainians. “There will be issues where we can make progress and issues where we disagree. That’s how diplomacy works.”
Two more meetings are scheduled for the same week. On January 12, Russian envoys will meet with NATO members, and on January 13, consultations will take place between the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Russia.
For years, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe monitored a ceasefire between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian government army in Ukraine.
Tensions between Russia and the West are currently rising due to the increase of Russian forces on the border with Ukraine. This Eastern European country would like to join NATO. The United States announced that it would impose severe sanctions on Russia if it decided to invade the neighboring country.
