The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is preparing with the help of the Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen for a possible outbreak of the fungus Candida auris, a spokesman for the institute confirmed after reporting by AD. Mushrooms, which can be dangerous to humans, seem to be on the rise in America, but according to the RIVM, they are also on the rise in countries around us.

Candida auris is a rare yeast that is difficult to treat, says RIVM researcher Thijs Bosch. auris is the most well-known family of candida albicans, which can cause vaginal yeast infection in women.

According to researchers at Radboud University Medical Center Nijmegen, halo appears to be less pathogenic than pecan, but once in the bloodstream, both are usually life-threatening. However, for people with a healthy immune system, they don’t have to reach for that, Bush stresses. They can clean the mold by themselves.

In the Netherlands, five cases of fungus infection have been detected in the past five years. According to the RIVM, these were all people who caught the fungus abroad. They didn’t get sick of it. The fungus was discovered because they went to the hospital in the Netherlands and were carefully examined for possible infections due to their recent visit to a foreign hospital. This is how fungi appeared.

Candida auris can spread from person to person, but possibly also through medical instruments, for example. They are always well disinfected in the Netherlands, says Bosch, “but there is always a small chance that those medical instruments, such as catheters, are spreading fungus.” Not everything is clear yet about the exact route of infection, according to Bosch.

After infection, you can carry Candida auris with you without it bothering you. Sometimes it can lead to infection. This can be especially dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, such as someone who has just had an organ transplant. All of this also applies to the “house, garden, and kitchen fungus” Candida albicans, according to Bosch, but the big difference with this alternative is that areola is much more resistant to antifungal medications. “It makes treatment more difficult.”
