On May 20, 2022, the first case of monkeypox virus was confirmed in the Netherlands. More infections are expected in the coming days. Today the disease is classified as a disease. This means that new or suspected infections must be reported immediately. This will prevent the spread of the virus.
The RIVM advised classifying monkeypox as a type A disease. Health, Welfare and Sports Minister Kuipers follows this advice. This obliges physicians to immediately report and suspect illness. In this way, new cases can be detected and isolated as soon as possible, and measures such as quarantining their contacts can also be taken. It explicitly relates to the individual case approach. No general collective measures are expected.
Persons infected (suspected) of monkeypox are required to enter isolation at home. can be tested. If the test result is negative, the insulation can be lifted. If positive, they are asked to remain in isolation until the disease becomes contagious. This is when the skin is completely healed.
