Proton introduces a new protocol for its VPN service that allows users to disguise that they are using a VPN service. Proton calls the new protocol “stealth” and stealth will be the first protocol available to Android users.
Stealthy Proton VPN should be available “soon” on iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Linux and Windows, writes proton. At the moment, only the introduction of the Android system has been completed. There, users can set their communication protocol to “Incognito” under Settings.
According to Proton, stealth ensures that the VPN connection is not recognized and appears to be a “normal” internet connection. This is in contrast to standard protocols like OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard, which networks are more likely to recognize as a VPN connection.
With TLS instead of UDP, a stealth protocol connection should not be recognized as a VPN connection. According to Proton, this makes it nearly impossible to identify as a VPN connection. This is useful for people who live in countries where VPN use can be penalized or for services that try to block VPN connections.
In addition to Proton VPN, the company owns several Internet services. The Swiss company started with Proton Mail and recently launched Proton Drive officially released as a cloud storage service.
