The creation of an independent advisory board on climate issues is one of the agreements in the coalition agreement. Jan Willem Erismann, who will become President of the Scientific Climate Council (WKR), is Professor of Environment and Sustainability at Leiden University and is known as the Nitrogen Authority.
In addition to Erisman, a maximum of nine scholars from various disciplines will be on a bench at WKR. Recruitment of other members is still going on.
“Science forms the basis for climate policy,” says Climate Minister Rob Gettin. Therefore, I believe it is necessary to strengthen the relationship between policy makers and science. WKR will play an important role in this by translating scientific insights into concrete climate policy recommendations.”
Ehresmann himself describes the climate task as “big and complex”. In addressing this, other issues such as protecting nature and species richness and “promoting broad social welfare” must also be involved. “That is why it is essential to provide the best possible advice on this matter from all scientific disciplines.”
