ROTTERDAM / BLEISWIJK – Today Zalando shipped its first shipment to a customer in Nieuwegein from the new fulfillment center in Bleiswijk, in the municipality of Lansingerland, north of Rotterdam. Leading logistics company Ingram Micro operates the distribution center and expects to create 1,500 jobs in the medium term. With the new location, Zalando will improve convenience services and enable the future growth of the Zalando platform.
With an area of 140,000 square metres, nearly 20 football fields, the new fulfillment center is the largest site in Zalando’s European logistics network and brings related products closer to customers in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and the United Kingdom. Customers at Benelux will benefit from a reduced average delivery time.
Megan Maley, Zalando’s general manager for Benelux in the UK and Ireland said: “We are excited to begin shipping orders to our customers from our new Dutch shipping hub. Zalando’s distribution center in Bleiswijk, near Rotterdam, allows us to increase then the day’s delivery and introduce delivery Same day for customers at Benelux. I would like to thank all the staff and support partners, especially Ingram Micro and the municipality of Lansingerland, for making this possible.”
Alderman Kathy Arends (Economy), from the municipality of Lansingerland, is proud to have chosen Zalando as a site in Bleiswijk. Shows the strategic location of the municipality of Lansingerland on the A12 corridor. It is a great honor for an international name like Zalando to boost our economy through this distribution center.”
Jeroen Balsrouk, Specialized Account Manager, Ingram Micro said: “We are proud to run Zalando’s newest and largest logistics site and build on our global experience in implementing highly automated e-commerce. Our active team in the Netherlands complements this with local expertise, and will further enhance Zalando’s convenient offering to its clients.”
For construction, Zalando invested in sustainable solutions and installed solar panels on the roof of the building. As a result, the site also qualifies for the BREEAM sustainability certification with a score of “Very Good”. The Rotterdam site will eventually have the highest level of automation within the Zalando investigation network, such as cargo-to-people shuttle technology.
The new distribution center brings the total number of fulfillment centers in Zalando to 13, with locations in seven European countries, including the new Dutch location. To enable future growth and serve customers with best-in-class amenities, Zalando continues to expand its logistics network in Europe: construction work on new fulfillment centers in Germany, Poland and France is scheduled or has recently begun.
The site in Bleiswijk was developed by a joint venture between Intospace (formerly Somerset Capital Partners) and USAA Realco-Europe.
