Italian fashion brand Prada will design space suits for NASA astronauts who will go to the moon in 2025. The company is working with the American space company Axiom Space for this purpose.
Prada and Axiom work together throughout the design process to make the suits suitable for conditions in space and on the moon, the companies said in a joint statement. Axiom chose Prada as a partner because the fashion brand is innovative and has expertise in production techniques, among other things.
The spacesuits worn by NASA astronauts on the International Space Station will need to be replaced. For example, there have been incidents of water accumulating in helmets.
Last year, NASA announced that it would develop new spacesuits. Axiom Space is one of the companies to which the US Space Agency awarded the contract. Development of new spacesuits has been planned for some time, but has been plagued by delays and other problems.
NASA astronauts for whom the suits are designed will go to the moon on the Artemis III mission. It is the first mission in which humans have had to set foot on the Moon again since the latter happened fifty years ago.
