Sailor Marit Baumeister finished ninth in the Olympic Elka 6 class at the World Championships in Kemah, USA. Maxim Juncker overtook her and finished sixth, while Mirtha Ackermann took 17th.

Bouwmeester needed top performances on the last day to get to the podium, but she wasn’t able to land a lead role. She finished 20th and 11th in her last two races at Galveston Bay. This earned her 97 points after twelve junk races.

Bouwmeester was overtaken by Juncker, who finished 22nd and second. She actually won a race during the championship, which put her in the top ten. Overall, I’m proud to be back and have been fighting for every point. But I also have mixed feelings. Because two fewer mistakes and you’re on the podium. But I’m glad I’m at the World Summit, said Juncker.

“Every mistake you make will be punished severely. The fleet level is very high, which is also very cool. It’s a really close race. The last two races I’ve been really looking forward to. They were close together. So I just gave everything.”

The world title went to Denmark’s Anne-Marie Random, who got 47 points. The Swiss kept Maud Gate behind by at least 20 points. And the third place went to Belgian Emma Plaschaert (69 points).

Baumeister is back in the United States after giving birth earlier this year. The three-time Olympic medalist in the former Laser Radial class (silver in 2012, gold in 2016, and bronze last year) has been training shortly after childbirth and is targeting the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Then the Olympic sailing competitions are held off the coast of Marseille.

,, I’m still very happy that we participated here. It was a tough World Cup. With long days and two days with lots of wind we have three races. So this was a good test right away. We are learning a lot and have a clear plan for the winter. “That’s the most important thing,” Baumeister said of her comeback.
