LVV begins with the numbering of cows and pigs

The Directorate of Livestock of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) has started implementing a pilot project for the Identification, Recording and Tracing System (IR & T System), which is being implemented in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

LVV Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry Research and Development, Gerald Teun A San, explains that the experiment is taking place in the Wanica region. 30 cattle and pig farms have been identified in this area. Owners of these livestock farms and breeding places are registered.

In addition, cattle and pigs are identified with a unique plastic ear number purchased by the Food and Agriculture Organization. Taking into account aspects of animal welfare, these figures are affixed to the animals by trained livestock consultants from Suriname in the respective jurisdictions.

The ministry then processes the data obtained from individual animals and companies in their data system. Each animal species has a different colored ear number that is not issued until after 5 years.

The plan is to provide national assistance to companies that are not yet registered within the first six months after implementing this pilot project, LVV reports.
